Literature

Hughes Claude Pissarro came from the illustrious Pissarro clan, grandson of Camille Pissarro and son of Paul-Emil Pissarro. He was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine where he often accompanied his dad on painting excursions. He first exhibited his work at the young age of 14 years; he studied in Paris and later became a professor of art and taught for many years, partly in Monaco. He also trained his daughter, Lelia.

Hughes Claude Pissarro’s work has been featured in exhibitions in Europe and the US and he was in fact commissioned by the White House in 1959 to paint a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The artist’s work evolved through different styles and techniques, from Abstract to Avant-Garde. In 1989, he began a series of contemporary landscapes which he signed differently in order to distinguish them from traditional works. Those Contemporary works are signed as Huges Pissarro dit Pomie.

Our example depicts the lush gardens of Monaco with semingly endless rows of helathy Palm trees, colorful flowers abound and an elegantly dressed couple strolling in the front right foreground. The air is light with sun and mood, generating positive energy.
