Literature

Domingo Ramos was born in Havana in 1894 and by 1918 had received a scholarship to study in Madrid at the prestigious San Fernando School. The following year, he showed his work in Barcelona. When he returned to Cuba he was a professor and later became the Principal at the San Alejandro Academy.

Over the course of his career, Ramos presented over 20 solo exhibitions as well as many Group shows. He was awarded various prizes in Cuba, NY and Europe including the National Academy of Arts and Letters in Havana in 1936 and 1938, the Iberian American Exhibit of Seville in 1930, the World’s Fair, NY in 1939 and the Latin-American Exhibition in NY, 1942.

As with our example, Ramos was a landscape artist of wonderful, vibrant color and vigorous technique. The deep red flowered tree contrasts the lush greens of the other grasses and foliage all set against a light blue sky with puffy white clouds. He emanated love for his land with brilliant success and light of the Tropic. Our painting was one of the artist’s later works.

The artist’s work is kept in important international collections and museums, including MOMA, Madrid.
