Literature

André Gisson was born Anders Gittelson, in Brooklyn in 1921 and lived in Westport CT most of his life. He graduated from the Pratt Institute in NY and was Captain in the Army during World War II. The artist was often thought to be French because of adopted name and as he closely associated with the French Impressionist movement, whilst refining and developing his own technique. He was a hard-working artist who painted landscape works in France every summer and over 4 decades, held solo exhibitions from New York to California and also London, France and Tokyo.

Gisson’s subjects inlcuded landscapes, beach and genre scenes and protraits. These paintings exuded reflective moods and serenity, in soft and vibrant color. His Carousel compositions were sought after for their charming appeal and French influence.

Paintings by Andre Gisson are kept in the collections at the Smithsonian Institute as well as other US musuems. President Lyndon Johnson and famed English writer W. Somerset Maugham collected his works.
