Emilio Sanchez-Perrier studied at the school of Fine Arts in Seville and later at the school of Fine Arts in Madrid. In 1871 he lived with Martin Rico in Granada, where he became friends with Mariano Fortuny. In 1879 he lived in Paris and studied at the studios of Auguste Bolard, Leon Gerome and Felix Ziem.
He exhibited in various group exhibitions: In 1878 at the exhibition of the national fine arts society of Madrid; in 1879 at the Cadiz regional exhibition, where he was awarded a gold metal; and from 1880 at the Salon des Artistes Francais, receiving a commendation in 1886 and a silver metal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. and from 1889 he exhibited at the Salon in Paris.
Sanchez Perrier painted landscapes, genre, architectures, and water scenes. His landscapes have enourmous clarity and his atmospheric style of painting remains popular to this day. Sanchez-Perrier’s work can be seen in important private collections and museums around the world. The realistic details and spontaneous composition in his paintings suggest that he may have used the young medium of photography as a supplement to his painting technique.
Sanchez-Perrier depicts here a charming landscape. It is quiet day in the countryside, where the overall mood is tranquil. Two figures are fishing in the river, one on his boat and the other one sitting on the bank. It’s a lush landscape with trees reaching to the sky. The palette of the trees is reflected in the water, suffusing the painting with a certain glow. The painter’s keen sensitivity to light can be seen in the highlights of the river, the grass, and the sea. The details in the painting and the color palette are exquisite. This work is a great representation of Sanchez-Perrier’s work.
